Oxford University Hockey Club
With a history spanning over 130 years, Oxford University Hockey Club (OUHC) is one of the oldest and sports club at the University of Oxford. Since its inception, the club has grown to become the largest and one of the most successful clubs in Oxford.
OUHC is a mixed hockey club, offering competitive and friendly hockey for students at the University of Oxford. As of the 2024/25 season, the club has close to 150 members representing the university through eight competitive teams (four men's and four women's). Our teams play against other universities on Wednesdays in the BUCS leagues and against regional club sides on Saturdays in the South Hockey leagues.
In 2024, the Dark Blues were victorious in the Men's match, but lost out in the Women's. This year they are hoping to claim glory in both matches!
OUHC Alumni &
The Marcon-Dyer Club
History
The Marcon-Dyer Club is the centrepoint for all alumni of OUHC. The Club seeks to maintain a dialogue between OUHC and its alumni, coordinate fundraising, build and manage the Club’s database and archives, and provide a sounding board for the current OUHC committee.
The Club is named for two distinguished former members. Charles Sholto Marcon was a Blue from 1910-1913, captaining the side in his final year. He served for the entirety of WW1, before returning to the hockey field, winning Gold with GB at the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920. He later became a schoolmaster at Cranleigh, before serving as a chaplain in WW2. In addition to Sholto’s own impressive achievements, his father was the master of Marcon’s Hall in Oxford, and was reported to be a pioneer of Oxford hockey.
Joanna Dyer played for the Blues from 2003-05, and, on going down from Oxford, enrolled at Sandhurst. After passing out of Sandhurst, she elected to deploy straight to Iraq to gain combat experience but was killed in April 2007 while on patrol in Basra. Jo was a talented and extremely popular member of OUHC, and after her death, her parents and close friends set up an award in her memory that is given to whichever member is considered to best embody the spirit and ethos of Oxford University Hockey Club.
Together these two names acknowledge the sacrifices made by OUHC members in past and modern times, as well as paying homage to the founding of the club and the merging of the Men’s and Women’s hockey clubs in 1998.
About the marcon-dyer Club
We have events running throughout the year for alumni, but you are welcome back at any point! We are always keen to see you return to the Fortress to help cheer on our boys and girls in Dark Blue. Over the next few years, OUHC is focusing on developing its alumni engagement and increasing the amount we do with our alumni, as we know you are keen to get more involved with the Club and hear how we are continuing to develop.
We have three major alumni events every year. These are the perfect opportunity for our alumni to directly engage with the Club and share in the fond memories they had being a part of OUHC. These are:
-
BEST DAY OF THE YEAR (2s3s4s Varsity) - Mid-February in Oxford or Cambridge
-
BLUES VARSITY - Early March at Southgate Hockey Centre
-
ALUMNI DAY - Late April/Early May at The Fortress, Oxford
OUHC is planning to introduce an Alumni Dinner, to happen every three years, and provide an opportunity to formally reunite our alumni community on a bigger scale and celebrate the Club.
On top of these, please see our fixtures list for any matches that you might be able to come to. If you fancy pinpointing any particular matches, we would be more than happy to help you organise an alumni group social and direct you to the best new places in town to eat/drink afterwards (spoiler: it’s Vinnies).
Finally, as with all institutions, OUHC relies heavily on alumni funding to survive. We are looking to set up small, regular donations from as many alumni as possible. The amounts in question could be as small as £3/£5 a month. These might seem insignificant to an individual, but, when summed over entire year groups, it will make a significant contribution to the long-term financial stability of OUHC.
Joining the marcon-dyer Club
All OUHC Alumni are welcome and encouraged to become a part of our alumni network; the Marcon-Dyer Club.
